Student Life

Art Program

At Carden Conservatory, art is both a discipline and a joy. Our art program balances structured instruction with open creative expression, giving students the technical foundation they need while celebrating the unique voice each child brings to their work.

Students are exposed to a wide variety of media — including drawing, painting, and sculpture — and are guided to develop a genuine appreciation for the beauty and power of art in all its forms. Kindergarten through 4th grade students enjoy daily art instruction, while 5th through 8th grade students participate in weekly art classes.

Our curriculum takes students on a journey through art history, from Cave Art to Modern Art, exploring the artists, architecture, and landmark works that define each era. Rather than simply studying these periods, students create their own works inspired by each one — deepening their understanding by experiencing history through their own hands. Along the way, they build a working vocabulary of art terms and develop mastery of essential concepts such as perspective, proportion, portraiture, landscapes, and seascapes.

The result is a student who does not just make art — but truly understands and appreciates it.

Music Program

Music is a daily presence at Carden Conservatory — not a special occasion, but a fundamental part of how our students learn and grow. From Kindergarten through 5th grade, students experience music every day, developing their voices, sharpening their musical skills, and building a genuine appreciation for one of humanity’s greatest art forms.

Beginning in Kindergarten, students explore foundational musical concepts — fast and slow, high and low, loud and soft — through movement and song, and are introduced to the instruments of the orchestra and the lives of composers like Mozart and Beethoven. Using the Kodaly Method, students progress through singing, sight-reading, and notating rhythm and melody patterns as they move through the grades.

By 2nd grade, students are singing two-part songs and learning to play the recorder — an instrument they continue to develop and perform on through 4th grade, playing solo and ensemble pieces with increasing complexity. Students also step beyond the music room to write and present reports on composers and instruments of their choice, connecting music naturally to their broader academic work.

Third and 4th grade students deepen their understanding of music’s full range of elements — rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, and form — while continuing to sing multi-part songs and expand their recorder repertoire.

Spanish Program

At Carden Conservatory, Spanish instruction begins early and continues through 8th grade — because we believe the best time to learn a language is when exciting children are naturally curious, open, and eager. From the preschool years onward, students are immersed in the sounds, vocabulary, and culture of the Spanish-speaking world in a way that feels exciting, rather than intimidating.

Our Spanish program develops all four language skills — listening, speaking, reading, and writing — through creative and engaging, activities including songs, games, and role-play. Rather than drilling grammar in isolation, students learn language in context, building vocabulary naturally, while exploring the cultures and communities where Spanish is spoken. The classroom is a welcoming, low-anxiety environment, where every attempt to communicate is encouraged and celebrated. Our goal is simple: to make learning Spanish something students genuinely enjoy.

Physical Education & Yoga

At Carden Conservatory, we believe that a healthy body and an active mind go hand in hand. Physical education is a daily part of school life for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade — not simply as exercise, but as an essential component of each student’s overall development.

Our PE program is inclusive and encouraging by design. Regardless of athletic ability, every student is supported in building physical confidence, developing teamwork skills, and discovering the joy of movement. Activities range from creative movement and fundamental skill-building to lifetime sports, always adapted to the age and readiness of the student. We place a strong emphasis on good sportsmanship, personal growth, and an understanding of how physical activity contributes to long-term health and well-being.

In addition to daily physical education, all students participate in weekly yoga instruction. Yoga gives students the tools to bring balance to both body and mind — building focus, self-awareness, and inner calm that carries far beyond the gymnasium and into every part of their school experience

Drama Program

Drama at Carden Conservatory is far more than performance — it is a rigorous, arts-based academic experience that challenges students to think deeply, communicate confidently, and collaborate creatively.

Through a structured theatre curriculum, students build a broad foundation of theatre knowledge and technique. But the benefits extend well beyond the stage. Drama students consistently develop stronger critical thinking, problem-solving, public speaking, and reading comprehension skills — as well as a richer awareness of history, culture, and themselves.

The program is organized around three core pillars. Through creative drama, students draw on their own life experiences to build characters, create environments, and explore the full range of human emotion. Through the study of historical and cultural heritage, students look beyond themselves to literature, world history, and diverse cultures — using these as inspiration for improvisation and dramatic work. And through collaborative performance, students bring it all together: planning productions, working with sets, costumes, and props, projecting movement, and performing both scripted scenes and monologues. Every student is given the opportunity to grow and shine, regardless of prior experience.

Technology

At Carden Conservatory, we believe that technology and tradition work best together — and that the most effective education is one that is thoughtful and balanced, not simply screen-driven. A growing body of research supports this approach. A landmark meta-analysis published in JAMA Pediatrics, examining 58 studies of children ages 4 to 18, found that excessive screen media use may reduce functional connectivity between cognitive areas (PubMed Central), with television viewing and recreational screen time showing a consistent inverse relationship with academic performance. A 2020 longitudinal study tracking children from ages 4 to 8 found that excessive screen time led to emotional dysregulation and negatively affected mathematics and literacy in school-age students. (EdTech Magazine) Perhaps most strikingly, research published in 2021 concluded that excessive use of digital devices may cause children to suffer from irreversible damage to their developing brains and limit their ability for school success. (EdTech Magazine)

These findings inform and affirm the balanced philosophy at the heart of our technology program. While we remain deeply committed to the fundamentals of a classical education — including the teaching of cursive writing — we also recognize that preparing students for the future means equipping them with meaningful, purposeful digital skills. Interactive smart boards in every classroom allow teachers and students to bring lessons to life, weaving technology into daily instruction in ways that genuinely enhance learning. In our computer lab, students develop practical skills on a weekly basis — learning proper typing technique, foundational coding through Scratch programming, and proficiency in essential tools including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Google Docs.

The result is a student who is equally at home with a pencil and a keyboard — grounded in the timeless skills that great thinkers have always needed, and fully prepared for the world they are growing into. At Carden Conservatory, technology is a tool we use with intention — not a substitute for the deep thinking, creativity, and human connection that define a true education.
